If you were using the Gradient tool, which shares a toolbox location with the Paint Bucket, press "Shift-G," or click and hold on the Gradient tool in the Adobe Photoshop toolbox to reveal the Paint Bucket. Set options for the Paint Bucket in the Options bar.
To use a pattern fill instead of the foreground color, open the fill-source drop-down menu, change its setting from "Foreground" to "Pattern," and select a pattern by opening the adjacent pattern gallery. Choose a blending mode from the Mode menu, and set an opacity for your fill. Use the Tolerance field to enter a number that defines how closely the pixels you fill must resemble the color of the area on which you click with the Paint Bucket.
Use the Anti-Alias, Contiguous and All Layers check boxes to smooth the edges of your fill area, restrict your fill to color areas that are connected to one another and use the color data from all visible layers to determine which areas qualify to be filled. Click on your image with the Paint Bucket tool in an area that represents the color you want to replace. If you want to change the color of the canvas, the best way to do this is via the Photoshop Interface preferences.
Alternatively, you can still use the paint bucket trick, which is to select a new color in the Color Picker and Shift-click with the paint bucket tool in the canvas area. If you do need to restore the original gray canvas color, go to the color picker and enter in the red, green and blue fields to make a new gray foreground color and Shift-click in the canvas area again or, you can reset thje color via the Photoshop Interface preferences.
A low tolerance means only very similar colors will be affected, a high tolerance means more pixels will be affected. The range is 0 exact color matches only to all colors. The example below shows how a simple gradient is filled with green when the center of the image is clicked.
