Shelter Island is a peaceful calming getaway just a 10 minute crossing from the Hamptons. There are no bridges or causeways from Long Island to Shelter Island so your only option for driving is to take a car ferry. There are two options and both are equidistant if you are traveling from New York City or further afield.
The time from Brooklyn Bridge to each port is similar and the ferry crossing from both takes the same 10 minutes, so it's entirely up to you which port you choose. From Greenport take the North Ferry Co. There is no way onto Shelter Island except by boat or plane. No bridges or tunnels connect the island to Long Island despite it being relatively close. Although more expensive airborne options do exist, the best way to get to Shelter Island is to catch one of the ferries across after driving the length of Long Island to the ferry ports.
Take the I across Long Island until you reach exit 70 at Manorville. So why not sit back with a good book or pop in the ear buds and leave the driving to someone else. One of the most obvious reasons to travel by car is flexibility. No timetables, no schedules, no nothing. You can do whatever you want and feel like doing. The Hamptons and North Fork of Long Island are destinations of their own be it vineyards , quaint farmstands , numerous ocean beaches or shopping at the Outlet Mall in Riverhead.
You may take as many mini-adventures as your heart desires along the route. It wasn't a problem to drive slowly and stop for photos, as there were hardly any other cars. The thought of traffic on the island seemed laughable. Built in , the hotel was recently bought and renovated by Salt Hotels.
One home was being built in an ultra-modern style, a stark contrast from many homes on the island. There's no hospital , however, which could be problematic for elderly residents. The island has four marinas, five public beaches , and several ponds and creeks. Unfortunately, it wasn't open during my visit, but I was told the area can get quite lively in the summertime. While its Hamptons neighbors to the south have become overcrowded, pretentious, and wildly expensive , Shelter Island is quiet, laid-back, and it isn't trying too hard.
